Ostoros


Ostoros is located in the east part of the county, 6 km far from Eger, between hills, at the foot of the Bükk Mountains. The village may be reached – in case travelling by car – not only from the direction of Eger but Mezőkövesd, from Road 3.

Its first certified mentioning in documents with the name Ystoros goes back to 1330. Anonymus mentions with the name Ostoros in his writings. 754 acres of grapes were planted around the village by the serfs of “Tihamér “chapter in 1446. The importance of wine production to the inhabitants is proven by the Village’s stamp, shows a four-clustered grapevine that has lasted from 1834. The event called “The Real Vintage” and the Harvest March shows the closeness of inhabitants to viniculture. The year 1552 sealed the faith of the villages around Eger: the Turks burnt all of them, Ostoros as well which only became inhabited again around 1715, when it became to administrate the Eger Seminary. According to its historical past, it has been a settlement of cellars. The explored 700 cellars were used as dwellings and workplaces. These “cave houses” were used for living until the 1940s. The national monument of Ostoros is from the time of the Turkish reign: it is a tower called “Ugly-work”. According to the gossips, an underground tunnel joint this beehive-like building with the castle of Eger. Travelling to Ostoros from the direction of Eger, leaving the place called “Barackos” (plenty of apricot trees) it is worth to stop at the lake of Ostoros giving great possibilities for leisure.
