Felsőtárkány
Felsőtárkány is located 12 km far from Eger, in the gate of the Bükk Mountains, at the north-eastern border of the county. The main road of the village leads us through the Bükk Mountains to Miskolc city. Archaeological findings here are from New Stone Age, Bronze- and Iron Age. Its first certified mentioning is dated from 1261. Kartaus monks moved to the village between 1330-1335. In the 14th – 15th Centuries Felsőtárkány was not included Alsótárkány, which today already part of Felsőtárkány. Both parts were destroyed by the Turkish army in 1526. Later on, Alsótárkány became repopulated again and changed its name to Felsőtárkány.
A castle was built on Gyönyör Meadow around 1750 by bishop Barkóczy. Parallel to this, a monastery was also built at Barát Meadow. The ruins of the monastery are still visible. In the centre of the village a Church can be seen built in late baroque roman-catholic style, by Károly Eszterházy between 1785-90.
Locals earned their living by logging, lime burning and charcoal burning in the past. Limestone and dolomite mining was also a significant part of locals’ life. A varied and characterised view welcomes visitors. Greater part of its space belongs to the Bükk National Park. Several brooks springs from the border of the village flow into the Brook Tárkány. The most well known spring is called Szikla spring, dammed into an artificial lake. The view around the lake is pictorially beautiful. It gives place to several fishing competitions. Moreover, on the 1st of May – workers’ day – and the 20th August – foundation day of Hungary in the past – plenty of programmes wait for visitors around the lake. On the third week of July Dedication Festival of the village is held, which is combined with a three-day festival of folklores, shows and bazaars. Many programmes are offered to visitors here no matter in what season they arrive.
Travelling by the old little train owned by Felsőtárkány Forest Railway is a great experience.
